A new global survey from Deezer reveals that most people can’t distinguish between AI-generated music and songs made by real artists.

The research shows that 97% of listeners fail to reliably identify which tracks are synthetic.

As a result, public curiosity about AI now sits alongside growing concerns about its effect on music culture and the artists behind it.

Deezer gathered responses from 9,000 participants across eight countries.

Each participant listened to three tracks and attempted to determine which ones were AI-made.

Afterward, more than half of the listeners said the results made them uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, only 19% admitted they felt any sense of trust toward AI in music.

AI-Generated Music On The Rise

Meanwhile, the volume of synthetic content continues to rise.

Deezer notes that nearly 50,000 fully AI-made tracks arrive on its platform every day.

These uploads now make up more than one-third of all daily submissions.

Earlier this year, the company warned about the rapid surge in AI uploads and introduced early detection tools to manage the trend.

Listeners remain divided on AI’s influence.

Nearly half believe the technology could improve music discovery.

However, many fear it will overwhelm streaming services with low-quality or generic releases.

In addition, almost two-thirds think AI may contribute to a decline in overall creativity.

This anxiety is already shaping behavior: 40% of streaming users say they would immediately skip a track once they realize it was created entirely by AI.

The broader industry faces similar risks.

A study from CISAC and PMP Strategy predicts that rising AI output could cut creators’ revenue by nearly a quarter by 2028.

For now, Deezer is the only major streaming service that clearly labels fully AI-generated tracks.

It also removes these songs from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists to protect the royalty pool.

The company explained that many streams on synthetic tracks appear fraudulent, and it excludes any suspicious activity from payouts.
