Pharrell Williams Faces New Lawsuit Over Neptunes Royalties

Pharrell Williams is once again under legal pressure.

His long-running dispute with longtime collaborator Chad Hugo is moving forward.

This time, it takes the form of a new lawsuit centered on alleged unpaid royalties.

The case marks another chapter in an ongoing conflict between the former Neptunes and N.E.R.D. partners.

On January 23, attorneys representing Hugo filed a lawsuit alleging that Williams failed to pay owed royalties and withheld key financial records.

According to the filing, the dispute centers in part on revenue from N.E.R.D.’s 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies.

According to Hugo’s legal team, the issue goes beyond missing payments.

They argue that Williams maintained tight control over the finances.

In doing so, he is said to have benefited himself while restricting transparency and access for his former partner.

Furthermore, Hugo’s lawyers claim this situation reflects a broader pattern in which his rights as a business partner were consistently denied.

They estimate that Hugo may be owed up to $1 million related to the 2017 release alone.

In addition to album sales, the lawsuit also references income from touring and merchandise, stating that Hugo did not receive his proper share.

In the filing, Hugo’s lawyers point to a lack of clear financial records.

They argue that Williams did not provide complete documentation as required.

As a result, the alleged failure is said to have violated their operating agreement.

It made difficult for Hugo to accurately determine what he was owed.

In response, a representative for Williams pushed back on the claims.

They said the lawsuit was filed too early in the process.

According to the statement, there may not even be a confirmed dispute between the two parties at this stage.

The statement went on to clarify the next steps.

It explained that an ongoing accounting review will determine whether any payments are actually owed.

Throughout the process, the representative stressed, Williams has continued to act in good faith.

The representative also noted that Williams respects Hugo and hopes to resolve the matter in a way that acknowledges their shared history.

This lawsuit does not stand on its own. It builds on an earlier legal filing from April 2024.

At that time, Hugo’s team accused Williams of trying to register trademarks tied to The Neptunes without mutual consent.

Later that year, Williams publicly confirmed that he and Hugo were no longer in contact.

Despite the tension, Williams had previously mentioned working on new N.E.R.D. material during a 2023 interview.

Hugo and Williams grew up together in Virginia Beach and formed one of the most influential production duos in modern music.

As The Neptunes, they dominated charts from the late 1990s through the 2000s.

Alongside Shay Haley, they also formed N.E.R.D. in the mid-1990s.

Over the years, the group released several albums and developed its own identity.

That journey included the 2010 release Nothing and later No One Ever Really Dies in 2017.

While their musical legacy remains influential, their professional relationship now appears firmly fractured.
