Semar: A Musical Journey to Rediscover Conscience

Balancing between modern life and traditional roots, composer Ammir Gita and the Suku Cahaya Ensemble introduce SEMAR—a multidimensional musical work and a spiritual call.

They portray him as a voice of conscience that can be reborn in city streets, social media, or silent moments of reflection.

Ammir explained that society is currently losing many things, but the most dangerous loss is the sense of direction.

Through this piece, Semar aims to guide people back to their inner path.

The music in SEMAR blends world music, ambient, jazz rock, and sacred chants, creating a contemplative spiritual journey.

The release is available on all major digital streaming platforms starting June 20, 2025.

This work features various collaborators, including Sujiwo Tejo as the philosophical storyteller and narrator; Sita Nursanti, a sinden who praises Dewi Sri through sacred vocals; Sandhidea C.N, a dancer who embodies Semar through sacred movements; and Wisnu Ikhsantama, the mixing and mastering engineer.

The Suku Cahaya Ensemble itself includes Mas Downey Angkiry, a master of kendang and traditional Indonesian instruments; Yudhis Mahendra, a guitarist with a meditative distortion style; and Achi Hardjakusumah, an AMI Award-winning violinist who weaves classical harmonies with elegance.

SEMAR marks the first release in a series by Suku Cahaya Ensemble, aiming to revive the archipelago’s mythologies through contemporary musical expression.

They plan to take this work to global stages, including music festivals in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia throughout 2025–2026.
