Spotify Top 50 Shows Sharp Decline in Explicit Songs

The Spotify Top 50 now includes significantly fewer songs with explicit lyrics than it did several years ago.

Music journalist Daniel Parris analyzed Spotify’s Top 50 in new research.

His findings showed that tracks with parental advisory labels accounted for just 13% of the chart. The study focused on January 2026.

In 2018, they represented 74% of the chart.

Spotify Top 50 Reflects Changing Listening Habits

Parris believes several factors have contributed to the decline.

One reason is the growing popularity of older songs.

Classic tracks such as “Mr. Brightside,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and “Iris” continue to appear alongside newer releases in Spotify’s Top 50.

Another factor is the declining dominance of hip-hop.

The genre has traditionally produced the largest share of songs with parental advisory labels.

However, it no longer accounts for the same level of streaming activity as it once did.

The Rise of “Cleanification”

Parris describes the trend as the “cleanification” of music.

He argues that the shift does not necessarily mean listeners now prefer more family-friendly songs.

Instead, he believes the industry may simply be returning to a more balanced state after decades of increasing popularity for explicit music.

Parris also connects the trend to the long-term impact of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) campaign, which launched in 1985.

Tipper Gore led the initiative alongside other supporters.

The campaign aimed to protect children from music containing violent, sexual, or drug-related themes.

Many modern critics, however, argue that the campaign produced the opposite effect.

Parental advisory labels did not discourage many young listeners. Instead, they made explicit music more attractive.

Critics often describe this as the “forbidden fruit” effect.

The latest findings suggest that listening habits have continued to evolve.

As older hits regain popularity and streaming trends change, explicit songs now occupy a much smaller share of the Spotify Top 50 than they did eight years ago.
