Thomas Bangalter has shared how Tron: Legacy played a major role in shaping one of Daft Punk’s most celebrated albums.
Bangalter recently appeared on the A24 podcast. He said composing the soundtrack for Disney’s 2010 sci-fi film changed the duo’s creative process.
The experience also influenced Random Access Memories.
Before taking on Tron: Legacy, Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo worked in near total privacy.
Bangalter said they created almost all of their music together in his bedroom.
They rarely involved outside collaborators until a project had been completed.

How Tron: Legacy Changed Daft Punk’s Creative Process
The soundtrack project introduced a completely different way of working.
Daft Punk collaborated with an 85-piece orchestra, giving the duo their first experience in a much larger creative environment.
Bangalter said the biggest impact was not technical.
Instead, the project showed them how collaboration could strengthen a shared artistic vision and open new creative possibilities.
The experience came at an important stage in the duo’s career. Daft Punk had already started working on Random Access Memories.
However, they were unhappy with the album’s early demos.
Working on Tron: Legacy encouraged them to rethink the project’s direction.
Looking back, Bangalter sees a clear connection between the soundtrack and the album.
He described Tron: Legacy as a collaborative film making experience.
He also said Random Access Memories became something similar. In his view, the album felt like a film without cameras.
Because the soundtrack was created while the album was still in development, it left a lasting influence on its final form.
Collaboration Became the Album’s Defining Feature
The change became clear when Random Access Memories was released.
Daft Punk’s first three studio albums featured no guest artists. Their fourth album embraced collaboration instead.
The record included contributions from Pharrell Williams, Julian Casablancas, Panda Bear, and electronic music pioneer Giorgio Moroder.
