However, the two records emerged from very different periods in his life.
Burns describes Love Songs From Suburbia as a project created during one of the lowest periods of his life.
Waking Up In A Northern Town, meanwhile, came during a much happier chapter after he moved to the United States and met and married his wife.
That difference is reflected in the emotional perspective of the two albums.
While Love Songs From Suburbia expressed a desire for hope, the new album captures a period when Burns had already found it.
Finding Hope Beyond the Happy Moments
Despite its more optimistic foundation, Burns did not want the album to become a collection of relentlessly cheerful songs.
He believes that twelve completely happy songs would not accurately represent real life.
As a result, the album repeatedly plays with expectations through both its titles and lyrics.
The opening track, “Darker Days,” is a clear example. Despite its title, the song carries an underlying sense of optimism.
His more recent single “Strangers” takes a similar approach. Its darker-sounding title balances against more uplifting tracks such as “Fall To You.”
That same balance shows up in the message of trust found in “I Will Follow.”
Christian Burns Continues the Story From His Previous Album
Burns sees Waking Up In A Northern Town as a continuation of the musical direction established on Love Songs From Suburbia.
He even jokingly describes the new album as potentially being “Suburbia 2” if the two records were viewed as films.
However, he prefers to see them as interconnected works that document different rises and falls throughout his life.
Many of the experiences explored across the album took place while Burns was “waking up” in a northern town.
Although he is now based in the United States, his connection to northern England remains an important part of who he is.

The North Shapes the Album’s Visual Identity
The connection to Burns’ hometown also extends beyond the music.
The album artwork features the M62, a major motorway crossing northern England.
The wider visual identity mirrors the themes found throughout the record.
Burns reveals that the music videos for the singles were filmed in and around his hometown of Wigan. He also photographed the artwork himself.
Some of the locations featured in the visuals have personal significance.
They include old paths he walked as a child, the area around his former school and woods where he used to walk his dog during difficult periods in his life.
By revisiting these places, Burns brought memories from his past back into the creative process.
Those experiences then became part of the music surrounding Waking Up In A Northern Town.
Working With a Diverse Production Team
Across the album’s singles, Burns collaborated with several established producers, including Cosmic Gate, Pretty Pink, Paul Thomas and Little Foot.
One collaboration, however, had a particularly significant influence on the overall sound of the album.
Burns initially approached Banaati, known for his work with Monstercat, to work on what eventually became “Embers.”
Burns was impressed by how naturally Banaati’s production style translated into the track, particularly the sense of space he brought to the arrangement.
Their shared creative sensibilities helped shape a broader sonic atmosphere across the album.
Banaati’s production approach demonstrates an understanding of when to add elements and when to hold back or remove them.
That careful use of space creates an expansive atmosphere that gradually surrounds the listener.
